My grandmother was an asthmatic. For her, a constant supply of fresh air wasn’t a luxury; it was a necessity. I vividly remember that she slept with her window open, even on the coldest winter nights. Her room was always chilly, but it was the only way she could breathe comfortably.
That memory of a loved one having to choose between being warm and breathing easily has stayed with me my whole life.
When I first arrived in the UK, I saw this same problem, just in a different form. I saw countless homes struggling with the damp climate, fighting a losing battle against condensation on the windows and the persistent creep of mould on the walls. Families were living in stuffy, unhealthy air, or throwing their expensive heat out of the window just to get some ventilation.
I knew there had to be a better way. A way to provide that essential, life-giving fresh air without sacrificing the warmth and comfort of home.
